How you can help Fostering Foster an animal Give a pet a second chance Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Without their time, skills, and compassion, we simply couldn’t help as many animals as we do. Not ready to adopt but still want to make a difference? Fostering an animal is a rewarding way to help pets in need, offering them love, comfort, and stability until they find their forever homes. Whether it’s a nervous kitten who needs to build confidence, a dog recovering from surgery, or a litter of tiny rabbits needing round-the-clock care, fostering gives animals a second chance at a happy life. Every year, hundreds of animals come through our doors needing temporary homes. Some have been abandoned, others need a safe space to heal, and many just find the shelter environment overwhelming. That’s where you come in. By opening your home for a few weeks or months, you’re helping them prepare for a fresh start. How fostering works The process is simple. First, we’ll have a chat to understand what kind of foster pet would suit your lifestyle. If you’re a good match, we’ll arrange a home visit. The length of fostering varies; some animals only need care for a couple of weeks, while others may stay for a few months. You’ll never be left on your own. We’ll be with you every step of the way, offering advice and assistance whenever needed. Could you be a foster carer? Fostering is incredibly flexible, and there’s no one-size-fits-all requirement. If you have a calm, pet-friendly home and some time and love to give, you could be the perfect foster carer. Some animals need extra care, like puppies learning about the world or older pets recovering from illness, while others just need a safe and loving space while they wait for adoption. If you have a secure outdoor area, that’s a bonus for dogs, but indoor-only fostering is also an option, especially for cats, small animals, or those needing medical recovery. The most important thing is a love for animals and a willingness to help. Frequently asked questions How long will I have a foster pet? It depends! Some animals need fostering for just a few weeks, while others may stay for a few months. We’ll always match you with a pet that fits your availability. How many hours will I be expected to volunteer for? We usually ask fundraising volunteers to help with at least two events each year, but even a couple of hours makes a huge difference. You won’t be expected to commit to full days; most shifts are around two hours. What if I fall in love with my foster pet? That’s always a possibility! If you decide you’d like to adopt, we’ll guide you through the adoption process. What happens if I need to travel or stop fostering? Life happens, and we completely understand. If your circumstances change, we’ll arrange alternative care for the animal. Will I need to pay for anything? No, fostering is completely free. All food, medical care, and essential supplies are provided by the RSPCA, so you can focus on giving your foster pet the best care. Ready to make a difference?
