About us Our history Caring for animals in Doncaster, Rotherham & beyond A charity in Doncaster since 1893 and Rotherham since 1896, we’re nestled along the Great North Road near Bawtry where our animal welfare centre has been a lifeline for animals in need since 1965. However, our story goes back even further. The RSPCA was founded in 1824 as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, later receiving its Royal status in 1840. By 1893, Doncaster had its own auxiliary branch, and Rotherham in 1896, evolving over the decades into the charity you see today, proudly one of the oldest RSPCA branches in the UK. Your generosity fuels everything we do, from rehabilitating and rehoming inspector-rescued animals from cruelty and neglect, to providing a safe haven to animals needing a new home. At any time, our centre provides care for dogs, cats and rabbits, and a variety of small animals, from birds to mice. Every year, we help up to 1,000 animals find loving homes. Whether it's a dog in need of a second chance, a kitten looking for a forever family, or a flock of cockatiels needing an aviary, we’re here to help. With a passionate team of colleagues and volunteers, we work tirelessly to prevent cruelty, promote responsible pet ownership, and support animals in our community. Whether you choose to adopt, donate, volunteer, or shop in our charity stores, you’re making a real difference. Together, we can give every animal the second chance they deserve.
