Finding the best future for your pet

We understand that making the decision to part with a beloved pet is one of the hardest choices you’ll ever face. Pets are family, and letting them go is never easy, but sometimes, it may feel like the only option.

At RSPCA Doncaster & Rotherham, we’re here to support you with kindness and without judgement.

Rehoming your pet

Why you might need to rehome your pet

Life can change in ways we don’t expect, illness, financial difficulties, housing issues, or changes in circumstances can make it hard to keep caring for your pet. Whatever the reason, please know that you’re not alone, and asking for help is a brave and caring choice.

Our priority is to make sure your pet is safe, cared for, and finds the best possible home for their future.

Rehoming a pet

How we can help

We’re able to accept some animals from members of the public, and we’ll talk you through the process so you can feel reassured about their next steps.

Please contact us to speak to one of our friendly, understanding team members. They’ll ask you a few questions about your pet to help us assess the situation and advise you on the best options.

We may:

  • Offer to take your pet into our care if space allows
  • Help you explore alternative options or support available
  • Provide advice and resources to help you keep your pet if possible

We’ll always aim to act in the best interests of your pet, and we’ll keep you informed every step of the way.

Before you call

If you’re able, please gather any relevant information about your pet to help us understand their needs, such as:

  • Their age and medical history
  • Vaccination and neutering status
  • Behaviour and temperament
  • Any likes, dislikes, or special requirements

This information helps us find the right home for them as quickly as possible.

Rehoming your pet doesn’t mean you’ve failed them. It means you care enough to make a difficult choice to give them the best possible future.

If you’re struggling, please reach out. We’re here to help.

Frequently asked questions

Will I get to know where my pet goes?

While we can’t always share specific details about adopters, please rest assured that every animal is placed in a loving home that has been carefully assessed. All potential adopters go through a thorough process to ensure they can meet the needs of your pet.

How long will it take to find my pet a new home?

This depends on the individual animal — their age, health, and temperament can all play a role. Some pets find homes quickly, while others may need more time and care. We will look after your pet for as long as it takes to find the right home.

Can you take my pet straight away?

Unfortunately, because our space is limited and demand is high, we can’t always accept animals immediately. When you call us, we’ll talk through your situation and let you know what help we can offer or when space might become available.

What if you can’t take my pet right now?

If we can’t accept your pet straight away, we’ll do our best to help you find alternative support — whether that’s advice on keeping your pet in the short term, or contact details for other trusted organisations.

Will you judge me for giving up my pet?

Absolutely not. We know this is a heartbreaking decision, and it’s often made out of love and concern for your pet’s wellbeing. Our team is here to support you with compassion and understanding — without judgement.

What information do you need about my pet?

We’ll ask you about their medical history, vaccination and neuter status, behaviour, likes and dislikes, and any special needs. This helps us give them the best possible care and match them with the right home.
