Lost or found a pet?

Losing a pet can be distressing, and if you have found a pet, you’ll be eager to return them to their worried owner. If we get an animal brought to us, we will first check them for a micro-chip, check social media, and check lost and found websites.

Lost a pet?

Here are a few tips if you have lost your pet:

  • We often advise looking at the Pets Located website. This is our recommended way of making sure that lost pets can find their way home as soon as possible. Rescues and veterinary practices use this website to post found animals. Using Pets Located lets us ensure that lost animals are in safe hands whilst we focus on our rehabilitation and re-homing work.
  • Using social media - this is the fastest and easiest way to spread the word of a missing pet. The community is often very helpful in searching.
  • Ring local rescue centres, stray kennels, and veterinary practices - this is advised if your animal is not chipped.
  • If you have a more nervous/ timid animal, searching at night is better advice. At this time, it is quiet, and they are less likely to feel scared or overwhelmed. There is less noise pollution, and they will hear you better.
  • If your lost pet is a dog, drone searching has been very successful in reuniting owners and their pets.
  • Put clothes or bedding that smells like your animal and put it outside. Sometimes smelling their own scent, or the scent of their home, can lure them back.

Found a pet?

If you have found a pet, we would recommend:

  • Checking social media to see if there are any missing pets that match. Please ensure that a proof of ownership has been seen before handing the animal back.
  • Take to your local vet to see if they have a microchip.
  • For stray dogs - please contact your local council. They will organise a collection and try to reunite them with their owners.
